Things to know about your propane tank:

  • Gauges on Tanks – float system and located on top of tank
  • Tanks are filed to 80% (warmer months) and 85% to allow for expansion
  • On/Off Valve – SHUT OFF VALVE on top of tank
  • ASME Valve propane delivery driver uses to fill propane tank
  • Propane is delivered as a liquid and sold as a liquid. Turns to gas thru the regulator
  • May see frost on the outside of the tank on a hot summer day

Automatic Delivery

Propane Safety

Propane Smell. Teach everyone in your home or building what propane smells like.
Always take action if you smell any kind of foul odor.

Emergency Procedures. Learn what to do in the event that you smell gas and about the dangers that carbon monoxide can pose.

If You Smell Gas

  1. No Flames or Sparks! Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
  2. Leave the Area Immediately! Get everyone out of the house or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
  3. Shut Off the Gas. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your outside propane tank, if it safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
  4. Report the Leak.From a neighbor’s home or outside on a cell phone AWAY from the gas leak, New Canaan Oil at 203-966-5539 or call 911
  5. Do Not Return To the Building or Area until New Canaan Oil, your emergency responder, or qualified service technician determine that it is safe to do so.
  6. Get Your System Checked. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, a New Canaan Oil qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.

Flammable Materials

Move any flammable and combustible materials (such as paper, clothing, wood, gasoline, and solvents) away from any propane appliances.

Learn About Your Propane System

Request a visit from New Canaan Oil to learn what’s “under the dome” on the top of your propane tank. Identify the shut-off valves, regulators, and safety relief valve, and how they operate.

Talk With Your Children

Be sure they understand the following important safety tips:

  • Learn what propane smells like.
  • If you smell gas, tell an adult right away and then go outside
  • Do not turn or play with the knobs or other controls on a stove, oven, water heater, or other appliance.
  • Do not play around or climb on a propane tank, gas line, appliance, or other parts of the propane system.

Switching to New Canaan Oil

The process of switching propane providers is easy. If you lease or own your tank it is a simple process.

If you own your tank
  1. New Canaan Oil will notify your current propane company that you are changing to New Canaan Oil
  2. Perform Gas System Check
  3. Perform Gas Appliance System Check
If you lease your tank
  1. New Canaan Oil will notify your current propane company that you are changing to New Canaan Oil*
  2. New Canaan Oil will arrange for a new tank delivery
  3. New Canaan Oil will disconnect your old tank and install a new one and fill it
  4. Perform Gas System Check
  5. Per form Gas Appliance System Check

*The previous supplier will pick-up the disconnected tank.
